Learning How to Shoot Better By Randy Lawrence

Sporting Clays
Leon Measures is a zealot. His testimony about overcoming a malformed right arm, a dominant left eye, and a normally fatal disease make the rest of his spiel, the part about kids shooting aspirins out of the air with BB guns, even more credible.
And like all zealots, Measures is always looking for converts. His book, and especially his fine video, Shoot Where You Look ($90 package or $25 for the book, $80 for the video; Shoot Where You Look, 408 Fair Street, Dept. SC, Livingston, TX 77351; (713) 457-1250), should make believers aplenty.
Grant Ilseng taught with BB guns, as did various military units. Bob Brister wrote up the practice in his signature work Shotgunning: The Art and Science. Measures has portioned out his program into strict, week-long drills with a meticulous grounding in safety. Students are instructed to watch one segment at a time, then go out and -- Rule 10 of Measures' omnipresent checklist --"practice, practice, practice."
Everyone knows that shotgunning expertise eventually comes down to piling up empty hulls, an expensive proposition at best. The BB gun system puts day - and even night - practice into backyards and small, vacant lots. Thousands of inexpensive, noiseless, no-recoil BB rounds are punched into boxes, buckets, tennis balls, and finally, those pesky aspirin tablets. Shoot where you look, and the pills go poof.
There is a fussy, paternal tone to Measures' teaching that, at times, I find grating. But there is no denying the results he gets, nor the obvious dedication and affection he has for young people and the shooting sports. The book is a workbook, with good illustrations and room for lots of notes; the video features clear, professional, over-the-barrel shooting sequences overlaying an appealing sense of appealing sense of conviction that is the basis for any effective coaching style. This would be a terrific program for an adult to work through with his or her child-let alone several adults going through and helping each other shore up their wingshooting.
