BACK TO BASICS - BOB ALLEN

North American Hunter

Wingshooters always seem to be searching for the key to unlocking their own potential, a quick fix to add a target to the average or a bird to the bag.

This quest often involves purchasing the smoothest-handling shotguns we can afford and fretting over intricacies like barrel length, choke tubes, shot cones, back-boring, and lens color for shooting glasses. The subsequent confusion can hinder our performance and cause us to fall into a vicious cycle of microanalysis. In other words, we "think too much!" Sometimes a refresher course in the basics can be just what the doctor ordered.
So put away your shotgun for awhile, because the greatest instructional program I've run across in more that 50 years of shooting involves a BB gun, "Shoot Where You Look" was developed by Leon Measures, a dead-eye quail shooter from Livingston, Texas.
In 1940, Measures was given a sightless BB gun and learned to shoot it by watching the BB. Amazingly, the skills he acquired with the JBB gun transferred directly to his shotgun. He's now about 60 years old, and I can attest to his incredible quail shooting ability with a 20-gauge autoloader.
In 1985, Measures was worried about the small number of new shooters entering the shooting sports. He wrote a book titled Shoot Where You Look to see if he could increase interest in shooting. A group of kids from Liberty and Dayton, Texas put on a show at the end of their four weeks of the "Shoot Where You Looksm" instructional program. They amazed their audience by being able to hit a BB with a BB from the BB gun. Most of Measures' students develop this uncanny ability!
Measures feels that we have gotten away from using our natural abilities to overcome things that might become a problem. Learning to shoot well comes naturally if we don't confuse ourselves with details. The "Shoot Where You Looksm" program reduces expert wingshooting to its simplest form. Every expert shooter has two things in common-absolute confidence in his or her abilities and a means to practice. Both can be developed with the BB gun, and it is inexpensive ammo. Best of all it can be done safely in the back yard.
Measures has packaged his program to sell for $165. including UPS delivery. It includes a Daisy BB gun without sights, 2,000 BBs, a videotape giving complete instructions, a well-written book, two pair of safety glasses, and a "Shoot Where You Looksm" shoulder patch.
I received one of the kits form Measures a little over a year ago, and by following the instructions in the tape and the book I was amazed at how well my shooting progressed. His program is an excellent way to teach youngsters or anyone of any age the fundamentals of instinct shooting.
Once the student has learned the basics, he can move from the BB gun to a shotgun and find that his shooting has been vastly improved.
Leon's book and program encompasses an 11-point checklist. He claims the checklist will work for you as long as you want- even if it's 50 years later. The book explains all these points in detail.
1. Playtime is over
2. Shooting glasses on
3. If I mess up, it's my fault
4. Both eyes open
5. Look through the "Do-Nut" hole
6. Contact points "glued"
7. Feet set
8. Concentrate on part of the target
9. Keep swinging after the shot
10. Practice, practice, practice
11. The center of every target is exactly the same size
All in all, this is one of the most exciting programs from one of the most interesting people I've every met. If your shooting needs some help, give the "Shoot Where You Looksm" program a try. You can reach Measures at 408 Fair St, Dept. NAH, Livingston, Texas 77351 or by phone at (800) 201-5535
He has special programs for youth groups and gun clubs. If you purchase the program, I'd appreciate any comments you have to make about it. Good Shooting!
